Historical translations of the Bible into Arabic trace back to early Christian communities in regions such as Syria, Egypt, Malta, and Spain. Notably, some translations originated from Syriac (the Peshitta), Coptic, or Latin sources. The oldest fragment of the Old Testament in Arabic, a text from Psalm 77, dates to the 8th century and was discovered in the Umayyad Mosque. The first Jewish translations of the Hebrew Bible, alongside those produced by Roman Catholic clergy, appear around AD 1000. Among the oldest known Arabic Bibles is the textual manuscript found at Saint Catherine's Monastery in the 19th century, known as Mt. Sinai Arabic Codex 151, which was created in AD 867. This manuscript contains the biblical text along with marginal comments, lectionary notes, and glosses.

In most Arabic translations, the name Yahweh (יהוה)—the Hebrew designation for God—is rendered as Allāh or Rabb (الله or رب), terms that are frequently used by Muslims in Classical Arabic. Similarly, the Aramaic terms Mār or Mōr (meaning teacher or lord) are translated into Arabic as Rabb or Sayyid (رب or سيِّد). It is worth noting that there are instances where an etymological connection exists between Arabic words and their original Hebrew or Aramaic counterparts; often, however, these are translated into more colloquial or commonly recognized terms.
